I am still young, so I doubt if I can say exactly when or how the Ankara
prints became a craze in the Nigerian fashion scene. However, what I
can say is that it’s now not only worn to regular Saturday ‘owambe’
parties, but has also has found a place in the closets of Nigerian
designers, and of course, the runways.
These days, a large percentage of
Nigerian designers parade at least one ankara piece in their
collections, giving the fabric a boost. Perhaps one factor which has
endeared the ankara prints to the hearts of Nigerian designers is the
light nature of the fabrics combined with the array of colours and
patterns it offers.
These colours and patterns are such that
when understood and properly ‘mixed and matched’ with a complimentary
fabric, can expand the creativity of a designer and help produce
varieties of a particular design. Little wonder this trend is still
rocking, with American celebrities including Beyonce and her sister, Solange, Fergie and Alicia Keys as fans.
Here are some pictures of the mix-matching trend.
