Train carrying over 900 passengers rammed into a trailer truck in Lagos.
Over nine hundred passengers escaped death yesterday morning when a
10-coach Iddo bound train rammed into a trailer truck at Ilupeju Railway
crossing near Oshodi, Lagos.
An eye witness said that the articulated vehicle blocked the railway crossing when the train was already close by.
The loaded trailer had crashed into the double barriers on the railway crossing shortly before the train arrived.

A Thai mother has been accused of killing, cooking and eating her sons because she thought they were pigs, the Bangkok Post reports.
Police received a complaint last week that the woman, a member of the Musur hill tribe in Thailand’s northernmost district of Chiang Mai, Mae Ai, allegedly “butchered”
her two sons, ages 1 and 5, and proceeded to cook and eat them.
According to the Bangkok Post, law enforcement officials allegedly found
the woman asleep with several body parts littered around her.
The woman was reported to be suffering from mental illness since 2007 but had stayed off her medication for some months.

days to The Future Awards 2012, holding in Port Harcourt, Rivers State
this weekend, 25 and 26 August, the Central Working Committee (CWC) has
unveiled the shortlist of 5 people per category for the Awards. See it
after the cut...
"It's,
as usual, been an intense eight weeks," says Chude Jideonwo, who is
Executive Director of The Future Project. "After the nominations, there
was the process of administering nomination forms, where we also
interviewed the nominees, secured references, conducted independent
research, and held random inspections of books, finances, and so on. We
also got evidence of all the nominees' ages and had a two-week period
for any complaints from the public. Simultaneous with voting, the Board
of Judges - 30 young media influences from across the country - sat for a
full day and produced the shortlist, which goes to the Independent
Audit Committee. The names will then return to the Board of Judges who
will choose the final winners."
Members
of the Independent Audit Committee include TV host Mo Abudu, external
relations director of the Nigeria LNG, SieneAlwell-Brown, politician
Jimi Agbaje, Stanbic IBTC director YemiOsindero, LEAP Africa founder

Two murder suspects who were paraded today by the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, Echezona Nwabufor, 33, and Ezekiel Nnechuwu Olisa Eloka, 23, have narrated how they drugged the daughter of a retired General, Miss Cynthia Akuzogwu Udoka, 25, and strangled her in order to steal her money.
One of the suspects, Eloka, said they killed Cynthia because they thought she had a lot of money in her possession. But after the dastardly act, they did not find a reasonable amount of money on her.

African leaders mourn death of Ethiopia’s Meles Zenawi
NAIROBI (AFP) – African leaders on Tuesday mourned the death
of Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi after the strongman’s more than
two decades in power.
His death at age 57 leaves a major power gap in the Horn of Africa. Ethiopia has played a key role in the fortunes of many of its neighbours, as well as host to the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa.
Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki called Meles a “pragmatic and visionary” leader who helped stabilise his country and placed it on the path of economic growth, adding that his death is a “devastating loss”.
“On behalf of the government and the people of Kenya, I convey our deepest sympathies,” Kibaki said in a statement, adding Meles’ leadership and negotiation skills would “forever be missed across the region and Africa.”

Soldiers foil kidnap attempt, rescue bizman, son in Onitsha
—Soldiers attached to the 302 Artillery Regiment have foiled a
kidnap attempt and rescued a business man and his son (names withheld)
in Onitsha.
An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said the suspected kidnappers on sighting the soldiers from 302 Artillery abandoned their victims and fled, leaving behind their victims and their operational vehicle.
Though no arrest was made, the Assistant Director Public Relations, 82 Division, Enugu, Lt. Col. HA Gambo said the gunmen on sighting his men fled leaving behind a 4×4 Sports Utility Vehicle, SUV alongside the business man and his son.

demanded payment of N200 million ransom before he would be set free but
no further contact had been made with the family after the phone call
last Thursday.
